What is a translation memory?
A translation memory is a database containing segments, which are fragments of the source text tied to corresponding fragments of target text. A translation memory is an asset for companies and organizations that have been building their resources over the years.
Translation memories are generally “one-way”, and searching usually takes place in the source language. They improve translator efficiency and help to significantly improve consistency of terminology and style, especially when there are many people working on a project simultaneously.
Using translation memories, we can estimate price and turnaround time before we start working on a project. The existence of a translation memory provides measurable benefits to customers. Each subsequent project for a given customer is analyzed for matches with previous translations. Similarities found enable lower costs.
