CAT tools and translation memories organize material into paired pieces of source and target text called segments.
Most computer-aided translation tools convert the structure of a document to enable automatic insertion of its content into any translation memory. This is made possible by correct file segmentation, i.e. splitting content into bilingual segments. This creates new a contextual data type - bilingual files. These files contain text in both languages within the same document. The final document can be created instantly and automatically. Bilingual files are currently based on the XML format, allowing for easy preparation and processing with any system.
